Is Google Ads AI worth registering and paying for
Google Ads AI is generally worth using and paying for, especially since it is built into the Google Ads platform at no additional cost beyond ad spend. For most advertisers, the AI significantly boosts efficiency, reduces manual work, and improves campaign performance through smarter bidding, better targeting, and automated optimization. It is particularly valuable for small and medium businesses that lack dedicated marketing teams. However, advertisers who want complete manual control or operate in niche markets may prefer hybrid strategies. Overall, Google Ads AI delivers strong ROI for most brands and is considered one of the best advertising AI systems available today.
Our experience
I’ve been doing Google Ads since the AdWords days when you still had to write your own exact-match keywords and babysit bids every morning like a Tamagotchi. Back then I was the nerd who loved it — spreadsheets, manual CPC, RSA testing in Google Sheets, the whole deal.
Then Google started force-feeding us the AI stuff around 2021. I fought it hard. “Smart Bidding is just black-box garbage,” I told everyone. “RSAs are lazy.” I kept my precious expanded text ads and manual CPC like a boomer clutching a flip phone.
Fast-forward to early 2023: my biggest client threatened to leave because our ROAS was stuck at 4.2× while competitors were hitting 7–8× on the same products. I swallowed my pride, flipped everything to Target ROAS + Maximise Conversion Value with no daily budgets, let the AI loose on broad match + RSAs, and went on vacation for two weeks terrified I’d come back to a smoking crater.
Came back to the best month the account had ever had. 9.4× ROAS, spend up 38%, profit up 82%. I stared at the screen for a solid ten minutes, refreshed it three times, then texted my boss “I think Google broke math.”
Now I’m basically that guy I used to roast.
Daily life in 2025:
- I open the Google Ads app on my phone while the kettle boils.
- The “Insights” tab tells me exactly what to do: “Your Shopping campaign is limited by budget — raise it 42% today.” I tap once and it’s done.
- Recommendations page is no longer a joke — 80% of them are legit. I just bulk-apply the good ones and ignore the dumb stuff. Takes 4 minutes.
- Performance Max is 62% of spend now and I barely touch it. I just keep the asset groups fed with fresh lifestyle images and let it cook. It finds weird pockets of demand I would’ve never thought to target (like people searching “gifts for new moms who hate flowers” → our postpartum recovery kits).
Real moments that made me eat crow:
- Black Friday 2024: normally I’d be up at 3 a.m. raising bids manually. This year I turned on the seasonal bid adjustment in tROAS, went to bed, woke up to record revenue and the AI had already scaled spend from $18k/day to $79k/day without overspending target.
- Had a brand-new product launch with zero search volume. Threw it into a PMax campaign with $500/day. Three weeks later it was doing $22k/day at 11× ROAS because the AI found people on YouTube watching competitor reviews and served them Shopping ads there. I didn’t even know that was possible.
- Broad match + Smart Bidding now picks up long-tail queries I used to miss completely. One random day last month we got 4,000 conversions from misspellings and weird synonyms I would’ve never added manually.
I still keep one sacred manual CPC campaign for my ego (it performs worse than everything else now, but whatever).
Look, the AI isn’t perfect — sometimes it spends $3k testing some random keyword in France at 2 a.m. and I wake up grumpy. And yeah, you lose some control, which still gives me mild anxiety. But the numbers don’t lie: I went from working 7–8 hours a day in the account to maybe 45 minutes of real decisions.
If you’re still fighting the Google Ads AI in 2025, you’re basically bringing a knife to a drone fight. Give it good assets, set a realistic target, remove your daily budget caps, and let the robot make you money while you drink coffee. I resisted for years and it cost me (and my clients) a fortune.
I’m not proud of how much I love it now, but my bank account is.
